There is no cooking involved, just basic cooking skills, which means it’s suitable for little ones to make too!

Okay, so it might not be the most attractive of chocolate treats to make but, boy, this Rocky Road slice is seriously delicious. I’m always super strict when it comes to giving my children sweet treats and so when I told Possum (aged 4 years) what we were making, she couldn’t wait to get involved and get to the point of taste testing the final product.

Simple Rocky Road slice to make with kids

The joy of this Rocky Road is that basically anything goes. Your traditional Rocky Road includes marshmallow and other things, however, my version includes whatever you like! I decided we would make Rocky Road that has –

• 450g milk chocolate
• 1/2 cup diced raspberry licorice strap
• 2 tbsp salted peanuts
• 1 cup small marshmallows
• 5 x Oreo biscuits
• 3 tbsp smartie chocolates
• 1 x Crunchie bar

This is a very flexible recipe and so if you or your child enjoys red licorice then you might increase that measurement and reduce something else. The above measurements seemed to work well with the amount of chocolate I was using to bind it together.

Add what you like to a ziplock bag and get ready to crush it down to your desired size.

When I need to crush up biscuits, chocolate or lollies then I always do it in a ziplock plastic bag and get Possum to hammer away using the back of a wooden spoon or rolling pin! It contains the mess and you can see how small or large the pieces are.

Children find this part lots of fun and discover that some pieces are harder to crush than others.

Carefully melt the chocolate in a bowl and gradually add your mix-ins small amounts at a time. It’s important not to do it the other way as adding chocolate to the mix-ins could find you have too many mix-ins and not enough chocolate to cover it or have it stick together properly. We probably used half the crushed mixture than what I thought we would need.

So remember, gradually add your mix-ins to the melted chocolate!
Not the other way around.

Benefits of children learning to cook

Children will have lots of fun mixing, crushing and eating this Rocky Road and it can made using whatever mix-ins the family enjoys. Of course you might want to reinforce that this type of food is considered a ‘sometimes’ food or a special treat that can only be enjoyed occasionally. No doubt they will be asking for this slice time and time again.
